The Challenge

For a team running a token ecosystem day to day, that missing half is where the work actually lives. Without it, operations run out of wallet interfaces, block explorers and spreadsheets that nobody can reconcile at the end of the week.

A reviewer, an operator and a support agent have different jobs, and giving all three unrestricted access creates risk that grows with the team.

Token-linked operations had to run through defined workflows rather than depending on whoever happened to hold the wallet.

Administrators had to be able to check what was done, by whom, and whether it completed on-chain.

How We Built the George Operating Layer

Role-Based Permission Mapping

Access was separated by operational responsibility, so what a team member can initiate or review is determined by their role rather than by whether they happen to have the dashboard open.

Token-Linked Automation

Approved actions run through defined workflows with role and condition checks ahead of execution, which turns one-off manual operations into something repeatable.

Action Records Tied to Transactions

Each operational action is stored alongside the on-chain activity it produced, so the business record and the blockchain record describe the same event and can be checked against each other.

Wallet Permission and Staff Permission Are Different Problems

The chain decides whether an address can execute an action. The application decides whether a person should be shown the option at all. Keeping both in view is what makes a token ecosystem operable by more than one person.

One Action, Two Records

Every meaningful operation exists as a business event and a blockchain event. The system knows both records describe the same thing, which is what makes on-chain transparency into actual accountability.

Smart Contracts Automate Chain Rules, Applications Automate Business Rules

Conflating the two produces either an over-engineered contract or an under-governed dashboard. The token contract handles token logic and the operating layer handles workflow.

Basescan is built for examining a transaction. An internal team needs to run a product. Building the second on top of the first was the whole point.

About George on Base

George on Base is a community token ecosystem built around $GEORGE on Base, Coinbase's Ethereum Layer 2. The project describes itself as an on-chain tribute to a familiar cartoon monkey, with a wider ecosystem covering NFTs, games, collectibles and AI-generated art alongside the token. $GEORGE is an ERC-20 asset with a fixed supply of one billion, listed on CoinMarketCap under the Memes and Animal Memes categories, with the contract publicly verifiable on Basescan.

Project Impact

The internal team gained an operating layer above the blockchain. Instead of working from wallet interfaces and raw explorer data, administrators can review token-linked actions, user activity and operational status inside one environment, with permissions separating who does what.
The architecture keeps Base's public transaction trail intact and adds the context around it. Anyone can still verify a transaction independently. The difference is that the team running the ecosystem can now answer who initiated it, whether they were authorised, and what happened next, without reassembling that from four places.
